An update from the Governor’s Climate Council

Join us to hear from Maine’s New Climate Council, a multi-sector group designed to advise the Governor and Legislature on ways to mitigate the causes of, prepare for, and adapt to the consequences of climate change. The event will cover how climate change is affecting Maine, introduce Maine’s new Climate Council, and present tips on how you can engage with climate policy in the State. With a representative from the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, who oversees the Council, along with two representatives from different working groups, we will surely be given comprehensive insight into this exciting and important initiative.

GUEST SPEAKERS:

Brian Ambrette is a Senior Climate Resilience Coordinator with the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. Brian has a decade and a half of community, conservation, and nonprofit experience in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. From 2014-2019, Brian was the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Coastal Resilience Program Manager at the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy in Maryland. He provided rural communities with adaptation and resilience planning assistance through a groundbreaking regional climate collaborative. He also served as a member of the Maryland Climate Change Commission’s Adaptation & Response Working Group.

Sarah Cushman, Co-chair of the Climate Council’s Transportation Working Group, helps people have happy commutes. As a transportation planning consultant and former auto mechanic, she works for transportation options that improve the quality of life of commuters and the livability of communities. Sarah loves seeing how each of us connects more with the people and places around us when we walk, ride a bicycle, share a car ride and hop on the bus (or ferry or train). She enjoys knitting together ideas, initiatives and people from across Maine and beyond.

Jesse Thompson, a member of the Climate Council’s Buildings Working Group,  is an award-winning architect who has become a national leader in green building design.  A partner at Kaplan Thompson Architects in Portland, he is a President of Maine AIA, the first architect in northern New England to become a Passive House Consultant, and a LEED Accredited Professional.  He grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, received his BArch from the University of Oregon, and now lives with his family in the Deering Center neighborhood of Portland.
